What torrent sites are doing is totally illegal, I agree with that. But don't most, if not all, have some sort of "don't download if you don't own" policy? I think it's a weak barrier, but it is a policy to stop illegal actions on their sites. And should it be illegal for me to download an mp3 rip of a CD I own? I don't think so, but I'm not sure if it is or not.

Anyone ever use Hotline Client? Almost everyone's server welcome message contains "Do not enter if you are an employee of the FBI, CIA, or other government agency blah blah blah". Again, it's kind of weak, but what they're basically saying is "Do not enter my PRIVATE connection unless I say you can". This is the case with torrent sites, and all they host is a small file that links people together to some files that are on the user's private connections.

It's definitely harder for the government to enforce cyber crimes because they know illegal activity goes down, but they can't prove it. It's a whole mess that they seem to sidestep the real world legal process to take action against.

I dont get how they get number such as "hundreds of billions of dollars in lost revenue". I think thats such a bs statement... This is how it works for me and Im sure 80% if not more are just like me:

The programs/games/music I download I:

A: would have never been able to afford anywayz... (I.E. Adobe Photoshop)

B: would never have bought as many games/cd's as I've downloaded

C: I download rips of songs I own just cause its easier then ripping the cd...

D: I buy the music/games I like anyways.

And one last bitch fest before I got to sleep... I would say at least half of the people downloading music/games are under the age of 16. I dont know about you guys, but I sure as hell wasnt making dick for money when I was that age, and sure as hell couldnt afford to buy my own games/music.

I definitely agree with you there, I didn't make a whole lot of money until...well, until I got out of college, so up until then, if there was something I wanted/needed, well, I'd find a way of getting it.

Nowadays, its really just the method of trying before buying...in most cases...

I hear what you said, Johnny. Part of it was the whole "fuck tha man" phase most of us go through. I was going through this phase up until my freshman year of college when I wrote a paper on the RIAA. I kinda went into the paper thinking that the RIAA was evil and pirating wasn't bad. I came out thinking the RIAA is evil, but piracy hurts a lot more than big bad corporations. A month ago one of my favorite music stores, and also the closest to my house, went out of business. I attribute part of it to music piracy. It's sad to see a nice store with a nice owner and nice employees go under for that reason.

Wtf, last summer I got paid dick for a managerial position of some import to the establishment of which I worked. I worked the preperation and about half the cooking part of Garde Manger at an upscale Country club, I had two people under me. (unbeknownst to me at the time, they made more than I did.)

I worked there twice, Once when I was 17 before I had my degree in culinary arts, and after, last summer, when I had my degree and REALLY didnt want to get back in the biz but i needed money.

The first time I worked I made 8.50 an hour, for basically messing around the kitchen and learning and cooking and helping and stuff. And it sucked still, cuz everyone except two people there were assholes and chauvenistic racists to boot.

Second time I worked there, as before, I was in a responsible position, WITH a culinary Cert from an accredited school, and two folks who I took responsibility for on a daily basis.

Guess how much I got paid.... 8.50 an hour.... MOTHER FUCKERS!!
it wouldnt have been so bad if I'd not known my subordinates got paid more than I did. to be fair, they didnt know I made less. They were always like, "hey gringa, choo make mucho dinero eh?" and I'd be like "no, esseh, poquito dinero... MUY poquito dinero!" and then we'd do the cucaroacha. Little did they know that I chewed out my boss at the end of my employment for being a capitalizing asshole.

But did I sue them for money I SHOULD have made? no. and I'm sure there are plenty other workers in this country who feel the same way. But these folks arent poor or bad off if they can buy off judges and lawyer and FBI laison officers so they can get money from desperate intelligent people who cant afford their shit anyway.
