haiku may be of interest to you. the first release/version of haiku is still being developed, so you can't download an iso image and install it yet, though you could play with it using a vmware test image if you're so inclined.
haiku looks pretty promising to me. i'm not sure if it will turn out to be as good as i think it will, but hey.. anything's possible.
