i got a new laptop

i did. it's a lenovo y530. it's nice. it runs ubuntu pretty ok, but the sound is kinda weird. it's way faster than my old one though. it's light. much easier to crap and compute now.

my old one started reporting that the partitions were 100% full, and then the fans stopped spinning, and graphical artifacts started appearing when i'd open programs. yay.

why did i make this thread? i don't know.

What'd that laptop run ya, and hardware specs? Too lazy to search around. I'm still using my old Compaq r4000... bought it when it was a new model 3 1/2 years ago, still running decent, upgraded to vista, also upgraded to 2gb like 2 years ago. Sat in the bag for a long time but now that there's an office upstairs where all the systems are it's become useful to have a laptop to keep downstairs..

Ya I'm pretty much committed to just getting laptops from now on. My current one is about 3 years old now, though as far as I can tell the specs are still quite good. I have to bring it to Tanzania when I go in December, so I was looking at low-end laptops (~$400) that I could just buy and leave this one at home. I figure I'll take this one and if it happens to get stolen i'll invest in a good new one though.

Donnie, after shipping and taxes it was just shy of $1000, but I paid for 2-day shipping which was an extra $20 or $40.

Specs (copied from Lenovo):
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5800 ( 2GHz 800MHz 2MB )
#
GenuineWindows Vista Home Premium
#
15.4 WXGA TFT with integrated camera LCD Glossy 1280x800
#
Intel Integrated Graphics X4500
#
3 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1066MHz
#
320GB 5400
#
DVD Recordable (Dual Layer) 24X Max
#
Bluetooth Version 2.0 + EDR
#
Intel Wireless Wi-Fi Link 5100
#
Industry Standard Touchpad
#
6.52 lbs
#
6 Cell Lithium-Ion

You can get this model with one of the ATI Mobility cards (I think that's it...) too. I also just discovered that if you press Fn+Insert it locks the function key for the number pad. Took me a while to figure out why the hell my keyboard wasn't working right... Dunno if that's a feature on other notebooks, because I've never accidentally hit that combo before.

I have a lenovo z61m that i got specifically for running linux on. I got it about a month ago, used for a good price (300.00). I like it so far. I am new to linux and wanted a laptop to learn it on where I could format it every so often and not have it interfere with my normal computer usage.

You gotta love how solid the lenovo's are. The tank like qualities of mine is why I chose it. I feel like I could launch this across the room while its running, and it'd still be alright. I hope you like yours.

I'm thinking about getting an Acer Aspire One netbook, because it's cheap and will travel well. I gotta go test one out though to see if its too small to type on.

yeah i think this "subnotebook" craze is kinda weird. i see the appeal as they are cheap and ultra portable, but i'd think even standard internet browsing would be a pain on those.

So I got that Aspire One. I've just been playing around with it a bit, and I'm happy so far. The keyboard is taking a bit of getting used to and i much prefer plugging in a mouse (but i prefer that with any trackpad), but i find the screen size and keyboard isn't too small. It's at 1024x764 resolution and I'm not having any trouble reading text or web surfing (8.9" screen). I'll see how I like it once I'm on the move, I imagine that's when it will really show it's advantage. Power wise it's not so good for multitasking, but I'm mostly just using it for reading and writing. I'll post a picture later.

here's that link that neil forgot: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo...DVxhvanAlXq1gg

i really want to buy a netbook/subnotebook, mainly just for tinkering with. but it would also be nice to have something like that when i'm on the move. lately i've been taking more trips on the weekends (hop on a train to visit friends in Ha Noi, for example) and i like to take my laptop with me, but i also like to travel lightly. my dell weighs ~2.5kg, and it takes up a bit too much space in my bag. i think i'll hold off a while though, because it's not high priority.

do you need to use ndiswrapper to get the wifi to work on your lenovo, raub? or is there a linux driver?
