Apple to move to Intel?

Well, the hot news as of late is that Apple may very well be switching platforms, over to x86. Some news sources are saying it's already a done deal, but, Steve Jobs has a news conference tomorrow at 10am PST (1pm EST).

What does this mean? Possibly a port of Mac OS # that can be run on your Dell/Compaq/Gateway etc, or maybe they'll go with proprietary hardware, that's up in the air, so is the x86 switch still, until it is confirmed (or denied) tomorrow. Another possible reason for the move is reported to be the new Intel Pentium D with built in DRM, hardware which will prevent the copying of copyrighted materials, this could be an early cue for a iMovies type software (supposedly there's an iVideo player in the works already).

It's being reported as official now, so, should be interesting.

And raub, the actual statement made by Intel, was a little tricky and misleading, heh.

The Intel Pentium D Processor and the Intel 945 Express Chipset family do not have unannounced embedded DRM technologies.

IBM was one of the reasons that Apple computers are expensive as they are. With this comes more competative pricing with PCs, which comes more developement, which comes more expandibility of the Mac.

Now once they make the price of a two button mouse less than $60 ... they'll rule the world.

I'm just wondering if this will make Macs less mac-like. Like Donnie kinda said, this could make Mac just another PC distrubutor with an Mac OS.

I saw a little more on this earlier, Jobs said that he would not allow Mac OX # to run on anything other than Apple Macs, and that he wouldn't prevent anyone from running Windows on the new Intel based systems, although they wouldn't support/sell/etc Windows for Macs.

So it kinda looks like they'll still have their systems going out, just with the x86 hardware. So yeah, time will tell.
