it is kinda a cool idea but i have some issues with wanting to "blur the lines" between everything. I am all in favor of all my shit hooking up, but video games, for one, I want to be kept separate. There's no need for an XBOX360 to also be a mini-PC. It should be a console and its own identity, not just a game-playing box, a small part of the next Windows platform.

but i also agree with you johnny, this isn't really anything groundbreaking, but if it makes computers easier and more friendly for someone like my dad who constantly says he doesnt know how to use it, i would be in favor of it.

So they're basically planning on taking a bunch of stuff we already have in one way or another, and just consolidating it with the Microsoft brand?

Doesn't sound that great to me. It sounds like somethat that's going to alienate software developers even further.

I dunno though, I can't really decipher what they're actually trying to do with this Live business other than make a Windows package that has tools that everyone uses right out of the box.

If that's the case, I'd have to point out that Linux has been following this for years.

Question

..so, windows live: today i decided, quite randomly, to check up on live.com. there still doesn't seem to be much going on there. it looks like you might be able to get hooked up with the beta version of their new messenger program, and there are some blurbs about re-vamping their webmail.. some toolbar stuff.. nothing too interesting.

i stopped using MSN/Windows Messenger when it stopped notifying me when I got new emails. I should probably check on my Hotmail account, considering I have some important stuff that gets sent there.

i only check mine once every few months and it's fine. but then again my account is super old, so i'm probably not on newer TOS.

i just tried live.com for the first time since its unspectacular launch, and i have to say, it's at least running a lot faster, and has a pretty good search.

that said, all the ajax and javascript on it just makes it less appealing to me. i like the simplicity of google's page, or the options of yahoo's.

time to bump this thread again!

so i randomly decided to check in on windows live once more--you know, to see if it actually does anything yet. it looks like they've modelled it after google. just a search box, a few links, and a sign in link in the top right. of course, once you're logged in, there's some more stuff.. but it still just seems like a different way to check my email.

you can't really expect MS to innovate. pretty much everything they are doing now is just catching up to Apple and Google, and to some extent Linux.

i was reading an article a few days ago about one of microsoft's next projects:

"If Microsoft Corp. has its way, consumers will soon be ditching their trendy iPods for a digital music player called a Zune.
The world's largest software company confirmed Friday it plans to launch a line of music and entertainment products called ”Zune.” The first product will be a portable music player and digital music service that will rival Apple Computer Inc.'s wildly popular iPod music player and iTunes digital jukebox."
(copied from an article in the globe and mail)

i wonder how this will turn out? by the way, i think the official zune site is http://www.comingzune.com/, but i'm not sure. the flash isn't displaying properly for me.
