help me help myself

Hey dudes, help me out here. I decided I want to make myself a keen site, as the one I've had in place for the past two years looks like shit. I want it to be pretty basic, too. So here is what I want, you chums point me in the right direction, please.

I'd like it to be kinda like a blog, as in I can easily update the news section by adding a new post and whatnot. But I also need a section for music, pictures, and a few other things. I also want it to be pretty customizable as far as looks go. I really only need a menu on the side, maybe a logo on the top, and the content in the middle. Hey, that sounds a lot like http://www.good-evil.net !! I dunno if I should use a PHP template or install something like Geeklog or what, you all seem to know a good deal more than I do about this sorta thang.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. The sooner someone gives me an answer the better, as I am fucking bored and as soon as something else comes up this project will probably be abondoned.

Ok, geeklog is looking pretty cool, I've been messing around with their demo site for awhile. Is it possible to completely remove some of the elements like the right side polls and stuff?

Most definitely, you would just have to remove the code from the template.

Pfft... that's just waaaay too much work... I honestly didn't even think of that.

I was just hoping there would be some admin controls to do that sorta thing.

if you know php or perl/cgi, it wouldn't be much work to code a little content management system on your own. you'd be able to cut a lot of corners, while still producing something decent, since you'd only be tailor-making it only to your needs. but if you want to get something together quickly, then just install something. geeklog looks alright.

There's plenty of Blogs and CMS's out there..

Nucleus, p2evo, Word Press, pMachines [free one], GeekLog, Drupal, xoops, Siteframe, phpMywebsite, dotprojekt, phprojekt...

And you could also install a phpBB, iPB, or another bulletin board... there's a few blog hacks laying around.

It's eeeezzzeeee.

Your host must support PHP & MySQL for all of those to work.

you wouldn't really have to edit the template for that. you'd just delete the block.
