Final Fantasy XII leaked onto the net one month before street date

From GAF:

"One of the biggest upcoming games of 2006 is Final Fantasy XII, a piece of software that's been years in the making and has fans around the world clamoring for their first taste.

For some fans, however, the wait ended earlier this week when pirated copies of the fully translated U.S. version began making rounds on the internet via various torrent sites.

Since the original report of the game's illegal release to the Web, some of the sites have pulled the torrent files. Many people, however, managed to snag illegal copies of the game while they were still up.

In response, Square Enix has begun sniffing out the various websites that allowed the file to propogate itself. There has been no word of legal action as of yet, but GAF will keep you informed of the latest developments."

Their comments section provides information how the leak might have happened:

"On October 2, 2006, a review copy of the game was leaked onto usenet and filesharing networks. It is thought a "release group" obtained a review copy from a source inside GameSpot - unconfirmed rumours suggest this could have been editor Greg Kasavin. Although either side has yet to officially comment on the issue, insiders from the 'scene' have linked Kasavin to the leak."

Looks like someone is going to take a big fall very soon.
