Gamestop to Buy Electronics Boutique

CNET News
Gamestop has purchased rival EB Games for $1.44 billion in cash and stocks. Shareholders of EB received an impressive $38.15 per share.

On one hand, this news is great because many people have had some poor experiences with EB lately. Personally, I have had some horrendous encounters with Electronics Boutique lately, especially the ones near where I live. I've been insulted by the manager for asking for "some gay Jap game" that I "should go to Lik-sang for" (Katamari Damacy, which, I note, I found at Gamestop and was complemented for my good taste by the worker). Or the other time when they didn't call my roommate for his reserved Metroid Prime 2, and when we went to the store to get it, they told us that they really don't get many Gamecube games anymore and they didn't know when they would ever have a copy. Right. Strange that KB Toys had the game the day it came out. And talking to their customer service, I was promised some promotional items to make up for my bad experiences, which I never received, even after calling them back.

On the other hand, this means a lot less choice on the market. Now, there really is no competition to rival Gamestop, and the possibility of even LESS places to get vintage games seems a little more likely now. But I have never had a problem with Gamestop, and they have always had pretty good deals on used games (my primary market).

It will be interesting to see how this deal turns out for the consumer.
