hmm, i've done a few installations in my heyday. If you have SHS access you could try uploading the .tar of the whole installation and unpacking it straight on the server which might bypass the block on .* files. or maybe not, it's been a while. Your server might just be fucking you over if completely if it doesn't allow those files at all.
Also make sure you set the permissions on all your folders as per instructions. Can't think of anything else, I never had too much trouble with it.
