Summer

What are you doing this summer?
There's snow on the ground here but for a while it was really nice out with the birds migrating back and everything going green again.

My plans haven't firmed up yet but it should be interesting. I'm graduating and leaving my current place, possibly to live with my family for a bit until I'm at the next step. I applied to some grad schools but I'm not sure yet if I'll go into them or seek out a job. I'm wait listed to go to another 5 week french program in Quebec, so I'm hoping that a chunk of my summer will be spent there, plus I'm planning a 3-4 week trip to Mexico to learn Spanish, maybe in July, but sooner if Quebec doesn't work out.
Other than that, since I've graduated, I'll actually have some free time on my hands which will be nice. I'd like to do some reading and some biking and some seeing of friends.

What about yous's?

raublekick 04-07-2009 09:40 PM

uh... keeping on just like every other non-summer season, i suppose. got a few shows lined up. pretty much just plan on grilling and jamming some guitar outside.

Mr Biglesworth 04-07-2009 09:49 PM

Do you play shows or do you watch them raub?

Speaking of which, back when I was a no-good punk in my home town, I used to go to lots of $5 local shows at local venues because it was fun and a lot of my friends played in bands. Since moving to my University town (5 years ago) I really haven

raditz 04-08-2009 12:57 AM

my friends and i have started a camping tradition. this should be year 3...

my only other plan is to have bikini contest between liss and amelia :)

Mr Biglesworth 04-08-2009 10:26 AM

I haven't gone camping for a long long time, I miss it. What do you guys do? Do you bring tents or do you have something else?

heX 04-08-2009 01:16 PM

We pitch our tents, of course. We usually just tell mother nature to go fuck herself and dominate the outdoors. This year me and another one of our friends wants to do something in the mountains, although nothing is in stone yet. Maybe something in Tennessee. Although northern Michigan makes for some great camping. We've even discussed maybe doing something in Canada at some point.

raditz 04-09-2009 03:47 AM

pretty much what hex said. last year was pretty rugged. hex and i went camping with our friends on an island last year. we were in the middle of lake michigan, with no electricity, no plumbing, no cell phones.... just chipmonks, beavers, and coyotes. i think we ended up covering a distance of about 36+ miles on foot during our trip. made some great memories. i'm actually hoping for something slightly less rugged this time, but we'll see ;p

Stormy 04-09-2009 05:57 AM

My current job ends in July (and hopefully I'll have solidified grad. school plans for October), so I'm coming home in August to see friends and family. Before then, though, I plan to go camping and doing lots of little weekend trips once my boyfriend is done with his current degree (and assuming the weather holds up)

Mr Biglesworth 04-09-2009 06:14 AM

Everyone's camping eh? Gonna have to give that a shot. My girlfriend isn't really outdoorsy, but maybe I can trick her into going.

Stormy I don't remember what you're doing in school right now. I'm guessing something like literature/english, right? And what are you applying for for grad school? Also, are you still with the same bloke?

Subsy 04-09-2009 07:14 AM

Working, working... and more working.

Oh, I'm also doing Otakon in July, first time in 3 years. Damn I miss that place.

Mr Biglesworth 04-09-2009 08:21 AM

Where do you work, oh-returned-member-ye?

squirrels2nuts 04-09-2009 04:26 PM

landscaping and trying to find a clinical lab research job

Mr Biglesworth 04-10-2009 09:10 AM

You've done landscaping for a while now eh?
And have you graduated this year?

GT2000 04-10-2009 11:19 AM

Still working the same job @ the cable company, just been moving up the pay scale and the ranks. Anya's dad, and niece will be coming in July we're thinking, so I'll be using a bulk of my paid time off then. Other than that, probably be the same ol' same ol', doing stuff to the house here and there and chillin', when I'm not workin'.

Not in school (yet?). I've been working as a research assistant in the UK for about two years, doing stuff with embodied cognition/psychology. I'm trying to get a masters in psychology, though I'm pursuing freelance writing... of shit... to respect the time I also spent studying English/literature. My boss is changing universities, and she would like to supervise me for my masters degree. If I follow her, I'll probably get an MPhil in social and developmental psychology. If I don't follow her, I'll aim for an MsC in experimental psychology. Statistics is my biggest weakness, so I'd rather the MsC, but working with her has been really fulfilling, so I don't mind sacrificing the type of degree.

Yeah, we've been together for a year and a half. He's fluffy. ::sappy face::

Stormy 04-10-2009 05:16 PM

Joshy woshy: What kind of clinical research are you interested in?

Ryan: Aww, Otakon. When is it this year? (not like I can't google it myself..)

Raub: Fuck.

squirrels2nuts 04-12-2009 02:12 PM

yeah ive been landscapin for like 8 years

i graduated last year

and ill take just about anything anywhere

Stormy 04-13-2009 04:54 AM

Do you have any larger goals in mind when it comes to research, or are would you rather gain more laboratory/research experience before making goals?

squirrels2nuts 04-13-2009 12:00 PM

well since i just have the basics from school and no real world experience i definitely need more to know what i want to pigeon hole myself into. for now id be happy micropipetting a million litres a day and doing it again the next day, but working on addiction and other opiate side effects would be cool. in grade 6 i made a mouse/rat maze to see which was smarter; in high school i built a model of nicotinamide and rationalized how nicotine possibly altered energy production since it was so similar and even brought my smoker friend into class to testify that smoking made him feel lazy haha.
good news: the clinical researxh associate program sent me an acception letter today, now i just have to clear my cc debt so i can pay the $630/course plus books. sheesh this better improve my odds by 1000%.

i remember you posting something or other about xenopus oocytes amelia, what are you into? :frogg: ribbit.

thecreeper 04-13-2009 10:48 PM

i plan on having a very long and unrewarding summer working. i'd love to go abroad but i don't have the finances. at the very least i hope to hit the beach a few times and maybe a return trip to seattle in late summer...

thecreeper 04-13-2009 10:50 PM

also, i still hold out hope on meeting a few of you guys. it's way overdue.

squirrels2nuts 04-14-2009 03:07 PM

Sorry, maybe in another 8 or 9 years.

Liss 04-15-2009 04:01 AM

Creep, where are you living these days?

I'll be here in Spain. I work until the end of June and then I have the option of continuing work with intensive English courses or camps throughout July, which I will probably do. I plan to work as much as possible to save for a meander around some of Europe in early August. I'm thinking about going to this music festival though if I get the time and money: http://www.rockwerchter.be/en/lineup/index.aspx

I'm also seriously considering taking 1 month to do this 780 mile pilgrimage for fun: http://www.caminodesantiago.me.uk/ not quite camping, but an outdoor adventure to say the least! That would be in late August and early September.

I have to be home in September because my sister in law is having a baby in October! The first of my siblings to have a kid, wow.

Subsy 04-15-2009 02:31 PM

Bigs: I do network security for a place called Computer Sciences Corporation. It's a pretty sweet gig, and one I am in no way qualified to do, seeing as how all I have going for me is an MCP, heh.

Raub: Oh yeah? That should be entertaining, maybe we can meet up. I already have obligations to hang with like 3 groups of people, and have a lot of catching up to do since I haven't been there in so long. It's going to be a busy weekend.

Stormy: July 17th through the 19th. You never came and dressed as Malon for me. I was going to be a Goron and we were going to be awesome :(

GT2000 04-16-2009 09:19 AM

Yeah, funny how that Atlantic City "meeting" went, it went awesome! :p

malta 04-22-2009 10:24 PM

I'm finishing a rack case for an amplifier and need to build a rather large record book shelf, but then I want to be done with projects this summer. All last summer I built these:

and some other things and ended up not having a lot of time to go out and enjoy life. I'll probably be busy enough with work, hooking friends up with bass, long boarding, and some serious chilling on the balcony with tunes.

squirrels2nuts 04-23-2009 06:11 PM

hell yaeh i landed an interview with a company here in london that makes enzyme immunoassay (Elisa) and Chemi-luminescent reagents and kits.

holey moley they havent updated their website since 2004

thecreeper 04-30-2009 12:11 AM

Liss: still in PA, about 40 mins outside of philly.

squirrels2nuts 04-30-2009 01:46 PM

interview went really well but my boss is on vacation til saturday, hopefully he gives me the go ahead and i can stop shovelling rocks in the rain to pipette things over and over again

GT2000 04-30-2009 02:40 PM

Good luck Josh.

Jesse 05-02-2009 09:56 PM

I'm graduating college in a week from today, and then who knows what after that. I've thought about moving back to Boston to work at the IT firmed I worked at a few summers ago, but I'd have to discuss that with my girlfriend to see what she wants to do.

I've landed an alright job as a level 1 tech support rep for Kingston Technology. I work 5 to midnight Tuesday through Saturday. The night shift is relatively slow, and the pay is good enough (for me), so it's good enough for now.

Summer, for me, always means camping with my friends, countless cookouts, beer, and just enjoying warm summer days and cool summer nights.

One of the girls in the house I live in just recently moved out, so my girlfriend and I took her room just last night. It works well, because now we have a door that opens up directly to a porch (which we leave open all day now, making great use of the screen door). The plan is to get a relatively decent grill, some lawn furniture, and throw parties 'o plenty this summer.

johnny 05-19-2009 01:16 AM

neil, have you figured out anything about Quebec and Spain? where are you going and when? i'm coming to Canada for a visit in late June, staying about a month. if you're not around during that time, that's a bummer!

johnny's summer: after my current contract ends on June 18th, my organization will fly me home for a bit. after a month-ish of visiting friends and family at home, and taking care of some random things, i'll start a new contract and they'll fly me back. (i probably wouldn't have bothered going back to Canada if i had to pay for the airline tickets..)

GT2000 05-23-2009 08:58 AM

Here's a late congrats on the graduation Jesse. :bottomsup
