the baseball thread

so this year i started following baseball again. it's been several years since i had any interest in baseball, but now i'm enjoying it almost more than when i was a kid.

so, for those of you who also like baseball (mike, and mabye some other people?): who are you cheering for, and who do you think has the best chance of going to the world series?

the jays are my team; the odds of them even making the wild card are slim, but they're playing well so far this year, and as long as they can stay competitive (even if they are a few games out of contention) i'll be happy. and i guess it's pretty early to be guessing who will last the whole season and make the playoffs, but the baltimore orioles are looking pretty damn good right now, so i'll probably be jumping on their bandwagon when playoff time comes around if the blue jays are no longer in the picture.

now that the expos are gone, i don't really have much interest in the national league :(. but i used to like the san diego padres, and they're winning right now, so maybe i could try to cheer for them. eh, probably not.

anyways, start talking about baseball stuff!

How about them former Expos? I had forgotten all about their move over the winter to Washington until after the start of the season...forgot about the billboards around here since Hampton Roads was one of the top contenders to get the team...I still say we should have gotten them over Washington DC, I mean, they basically have the O's right there, but, guess the market here wasn't ready, probably happen for us next time though.

i understand that the orioles have lost a portion of their attendance because of the nationals. i'm not sure that washington dc was the right choice of location, but i guess they're doing ok so far. (still too bad about montreal, though.. i liked the expos)

GT2000 06-01-2005 11:30 AM

Yeah...it's just too bad that not many people in/around Montreal liked the Expos..I mean, they averaged what, about 5 thousand people a game?

I remember when I used to watch baseball, when the Braves would play the Expos in Canada, you could play a second game in the stands.

i think things could have been different if there hadn't been a strike back in '94. that year they were doing so well that it seemed very possible they would make it to the playoffs, maybe even win the world series (perhaps a toronto vs. montreal world series, even!). but the strike killed some fan support and attendance in most cities around the league, and the expos never really started winning lots again after the strike, so it was all downhill from there i guess.

i think the expos mascot is going to be with the montreal canadiens now, if hockey ever comes back..

we've got our shitty phillies with a terrible manager and primadonna players. i try not to watch them unless i have to. i still watch a lot of games though.

raublekick 06-01-2005 01:54 PM

let's put it this way, my girlfriend is from pittsburgh and no one there likes the pirates. the stadium is brand new and no one goes there, except to see the stadium. and the team has traded away every shred of talent in the last few years. but somehow their record isn't terrible somehow. go figure.

Been a tribe fand since I was a lil kid. Living 45 mins from Cleveland tends to do that. Looks as tho the Indians are finally getting their shit together. Were sitting in 3rd place right now, but the white sox are tearing it up so i think the best we can hope for is a wild card birth in the playoffs. But its pretty unlikely.

johnny 06-01-2005 11:06 PM

cleveland was another team i liked when i was a kid. i don't see them catching up to the white sox, though. :/

thecreeper 06-02-2005 05:19 PM

does anyone even like the Reds in Ohio or are they ignored much like the Pirates are here?

Metallistar 06-03-2005 07:37 AM

I know a few people that like the reds, but they live in cincy lol

thecreeper 06-03-2005 11:16 AM

at least none of us live in colorado right now. tis dark times for that team...

johnny 06-03-2005 11:43 AM

they're almost as bad as the royals.

but the royals did manage to sweep the yankees this week, which is awesome. that's the reason the jays managed to stay ahead of the yankees in the standings this week (because toronto couldn't win more than one game against fucking seatle and last night the lost to they god damn oakland a's)

Mr Biglesworth 06-03-2005 12:50 PM

What the hell are you guys talking about!?

thecreeper 06-05-2005 04:25 PM

figures, the day i say the phillies suck, they go on a 6 game winning streak and look like they actually aren't shitty. fuckin' phils.

johnny 06-06-2005 11:32 AM

some interleague play is getting started up today, which should be interesting. toronto will be playing the cubs, astros, cardinals, and brewers. the astros aren't doing so well, but the cubs and cardinals are looking good this year, and the brewers aren't that far off of .500, so it should be an interesting set of serieseseseses.

so bring it, cubbies!
