...just like their rivals the PS3, and Wii, instead of the 90 days it was from release in 2004 up until this point. The warranty change is retroactive, meaning, you bought your 360 on.. August 1st, and then on Dec 1st it experienced a malfunction, and guess what, your 90 days just ran out, tough shit Microsoft would tell you.
Well, hopefully you kept your 360 had this been your case, as the warranty extension would make your 360 covered until August 1st, 2007.
