You get your own online music profile (http://www.last.fm/tour.php) that you can fill up with the music you like. This information is used to create a personal radio station and to find users who are similar to you. Last.fm can even play you new artists and songs you might like. It's addictive, it's growing, it's free, it's music.
It seems really useful for those hoping to broaden musical horizons, or to find people with whom to discuss music.
I just joined (http://www.last.fm/user/Vervet) today as per the request of someone at another forum. I like it so far, but my only qualm is that you have had to use the media plug-in long enough--and listened to enough songs--to produce any sort of charts of what you listen to.
Check it out. (http://www.last.fm/)
