It has gone live. Features include your standard chat (of course), as well as the ability to use a high quality voice chat. The service integrates with Gmail, and preloads your Gmail contacts into your friend list.

I haven't downloaded it yet myself, but plan on checking it out later.

i was readin' a little bit about google talk in the september issue of wired today. it was mentioned briefly somewhere in the start pages.. sounds interesting. i will download it and install it right now!

edit: download and installed quickly, so first impressions: i think it's nifty. it's simple, looks alright. now i need people to talk to! so i'm ynnhoj [at] gmail. add me up if you're going to check it out (any of youz) and we can chat about "what's up?" and "not much" or something.

It is? I don't have a mic setup, otherwise I'd give it a go. Gotta start looking into getting a voice chat/video option...

i downloaded it today, didn't have anyone to add though. it looks pretty sweet for a chat client, but everyone and their brother already uses aim and google talk doesn't seem to have any file transfer capabilities.

all you have to do is click on a contact, then click the email button and it will fire up your browser with the compose page loaded up. seems pretty simple to me, unless you're partially retarded (and maybe a little lazy).

what raub is getting at is that AIM's file transfer stuff is quite a bit easier and doesnt require you to do much more than select the file and hit send.

i don't really need another IM service, gaim works just fine for me.

eh, a few extra clicks don't bother me.

also, you guys seem to have pretty low standards for what is difficult, so i might be on to something with the partial retardation comment.. :P

it's not even the difficulty so much as the restrictions. unless google has changed their 10MB filesize limit... try sending someone an album through gmail, it's harder than using something easier that i already have.

plus, why upload a file and have someone download it when it's finished when you can cut the middle man with aim.

you know what i just noticed... the installer doesn't ask you where it should install! shame on you, google.

if anyone here doesn't have a gmail account and wants one just ask, i have too many to get rid of.
