Good luck. Apartment hunting was hard enough for me, I can't imagine house hunting...

ugh, i tried just looking for a condo and i felt sick.

i looked at 5 apartments in the area and said fuck it, and took the nicest, most affordable one.

We're trying to consider many things...

We're in a certain price range to try and maintain a mortgage payment below 1500/month.
Trying to make sure we've got room for.. um, expansion, in the future.
School districts.
Neighborhood.
Homes associations (can kiss my ass, were really trying to avoid those.. least we'd like to).
etc, etc, etc, etc, etc. ETC.

We're going out again this morning to look at a few more, plus revisit some we liked with my mom.

True, but how many of us have actually enjoyed upwards mobility since then?

I'm not sure I follow what you meant by upwards mobility, Neil.

Things are moving along kinda well so far, we've put an offer on a house which turned out to have some extra hoops to be jumped through. Today we've heard the organization the house was previously purchased through by the current seller will not act out their right of first refusal to reclaim the property.

We are going to get a true pre-approval for mortgage today and get the info to our agent so it can be passed on to the seller's agent, then the negotiations can begin...

Fun times!

We are tentatively closing on the house on Sept. 26th, still need to pay for a home inspection to make sure the roof is up to par... if it isn't, it's in the contract that the seller is paying for repairs. Almost there..

Roof is Fubar, now we hope the seller will keep up their end of the contract... meh.

Well, we've been under contract for a HOT minute now and they turned around and refused to do the repairs... or give us money in escrow for the repairs... so, we really want that damn house, we've given them want they want, just waiting to hear back if they even still want to sell the place...

I feel old..

Things fell through with the house, so we're resuming our hunting today, think there's about 10 or 11 more we want to see.

We found a house the first day back out looking... looked at it a 2nd time yesterday along with a few more, and put an offer down on it yesterday afternoon after it appeared another couple was showing close interest. The listing agent made it sound like we could be close but we're waiting to hear back... this one has quite a small backyard in comparison to the last one we tried to get, but this one also has a garage which the other didn't.. going to go back there with my parents today and self-inspect the roof and furnace while we wait on the seller to respond.

Things are moving along well enough I guess I can comfortably say with this 2nd house.. home inspection was performed yesterday and we quickly discovered we weren't in as good a shape as we had originally thought. Roof isn't right, electrical panel issues (i.e. life threatening electrical issues).. and a couple of more minor things. We're waiting to see if the seller is able to bring the roof to code and of course fix the electrical.. we were on track to actually close by the end of next week. Hopefully this goes on as planned so we can move on finally.. 2 months isn't a long time for this as opposed to what some go through but I'm off work for the next 2 weeks, and we would like to get 'r dun!

Closing is this Friday, still no sign of the roof work being done, which we're now told is supposed to be between tomorrow and Thursday. We'll see how this goes..

We closed Friday morning and immediately started the move.. we actually emptied the condo that night.. 1-2am, stayed busy yesterday, and will continue today, against my body's will, I am hurtin.

Sounds intense Donnie! I can't imagine closing on the house and then starting the moving process right away. Hopefully it all works out well for you.

Good for you two! I doubt I'll have property for a good while.

It's been a drain, still have a little unpacking to do, plus the security people are coming out today, plus still having issues getting our mail forwarded for stuff that hasn't updated our address yet.. Plus the new sofa set we bought ended up having a broken section of wood so that's back at the place being repaired.. It's a blast!

been a little more serious looking for a house lately. theres some decent places in the area, and i'm sick of paying rent that can go up at any time (and is overpriced anyway...)

however, it would be a hell of a lot easier with a 3rd person. you're right donnie, this is a headache.

GT2000

Once you own, you can't call someone up and tell them "hey you gotta fix this shit!". It goes more like, "fuck, I own the problem!".

thecreeper
10-29-2008, 05:54 PM
yeah....one of my huge concerns actually. i think i can afford the house payments and such, but if anything goes wrong....i'd be fucked.

raublekick
10-29-2008, 08:20 PM
yeah, it's kinda sad that we've lost a lot of DIY ethics and knowledge.

should anything go wrong with my computer, i could most likely fix it. should something go wrong with my plumbing, electricity, and so on? screeeewed.

GT2000

Yeah... I'm not the most mechanical guy around.. far from it, actually. The first night in the house, Anya popped out front while I was smoking and told me we had a leak under the kitchen sink... my best friend likes fixing things and always likes to help so he hooked me up with that. The back 2 bedrooms in the house were never wired for overhead lights so I'm trying to get my dad to help me with that next time he's in town.

And I'm trying to figure out what we can do about the heating/cooling... the upstairs is typically 5 degrees warmer than the downstairs.. I have the heat set to 72, and it is hot as shit when it runs upstairs.. of course heat rises.. but theres gotta be a fix for this, lol.

Oh, and I've been sitting here this morning trying to go over the bills for next month, getting new accounts set up in our bill pay and what not. First few months are going to be the most interesting, seeing how the living expenses have gone up and trying to adjust to them.
