well i some how managed to hit a half-terabyte in downlowds/uploads, over this last month. my comcast account was suspended untill i contacted the fraud department. i was told i used a half terabyte by the guy in the fraud department. i had read the average residential user, uses about 8gb-20gb a month, so apparently i really overkilled it.

has this ever happen to anyone else? i had read on another forum some one had this problem and they estimate they used about 300gb that month. I was thinking Donnie might know a little bit about this since he worked for comcast.

how did you manage to transfer so much? do you get lots of stuff from usenet? or do you use bittorrent and leave the torrents seeding?

im about sick of comcast lately. last night they killed my internet when i made changes to my digital cable service.

after an hour or waiting, it took some guy a min to fix the problem on his end.

bleh.

No, I work @ Cox Communications, actually, have for almost 5 years now.

And yes, I saw some stuff about Comcast starting to hammer down on abusive users (yes, that is what we call you), even though they claim to have unlimited bandwidth, or so that's what was being said, haven't looked at Comcast's offerings personally.

We do have our caps mentioned when users sign up, it's in the agreement that no one reads, and it is in the ball park of about 60gb/mo, forget what the daily limit is. I believe it's generally a 3 strike and yer out deal, we'll send an email from the abuse team, and another, and then yer out (of service). They're pretty slack on it from what I understand, if it's a small amount in a day like half a gig over the daily limit, and it's not a common occurance on your account, then you won't see a problem, but if it's a constant thing that you're running over the daily/monthly limits, then yeah, you've breached contract, so to speak.

I'm sure as time goes by caps will be increased, since speeds are still being increased.. 55/mo gets 15/2Mbps right now, maybe in a year or two it will be more like 30/5 or 30/10 (eventually providers will discover the value of the upstream, eventually...).

Oh yeah, wanted to add.. over the years, I've spoken with more subs that have been cut off due to virus issues than bandwidth hogging.

I use bittorrent to download, but i never seed (only freeware i assure you). I don't even download torrents all that often, maybe 1gb a month. As far as how i transfered so much stuff, I am sorry I can not answer that, but I will say I have an idea of where the banwith is going.

Very insightful, thanks Donnie. I will have to look over my contract. When trying to figure out what my cap is, all I can find is alot of other people pissed comcast won't put a number on the cap, just that they have gone over it. 60gb doesnt seem like much, I thought I read it might be floating some where around 200gb. I realize the cap you gave wasnt for comcast, but I am betting they are close.

Yeah, if i end up terminated, I'll probably go DSL. This sucks not being able to download pretty much anything in fear I wont have service.
